Spilanthes acmella (Toothache bud)
Spilanthes is a flowering herb native to Brazil. It is a small direct growing plant with broad leaves and has delicate gold and red flowers that look like a bullseye. Other names for Spilanthes are toothache plant, paracress, and electric daisy.. Popularly, it is known as toothache plant which reduces the pain associated with toothaches and can induce saliva secretion. Spilanthes acmella, with high medicinal usages, has been recognized as an important medicinal plant and has an increasingly high demand worldwide. Spilanthes acmella is cultivated throughout the year as ornamental or medicinal plant. It is an annual or short-lived herb that is 40-60 centimeters tall. It is grown in damp area and has low rate of germination or poor vegetative propagation. Its flowers and leaves have pungent taste and when touched it is accompanied by tingling sensation and numbness. The plant species has been used commonly as remedy for toothache, rheumatic and fever.
