Silene capensis also known as Silene undulata is a root used in ubulawu preparations. The root is regarded by the Xhosa people as a sacred plant. Silene Capensis is a psychoactive spiritual medicine used by the indigenous people of southern Africa to communicate with their ancestral spirits. The roots is boiled and taken orally in the initiation of diviners and is well known to produce lucid dreams related to the ancestral spirits. The silene capensis root is also used as a medicine in treating many diseases particularly fevers and delirium.
Capensis root is traditionally used to induce vivid and lucid dreams during the initiation process of shamans. It is classified and has a naturally occurring oneirogen similar to the more well-known dream herb Calea zacatechichi (dream Herb).
