Virola Calophylla 5X tree sap comes from Virola species. The Virola Tree Sap is created using a traditional Peruvian technique.The tree sap is boiled down 5 times to produce a dark red syrup like liquid. Virola Calophylla 5X tree sap is prepared by scrapings the red resin beneath the cambium of the Virola calophylla tree. After the resin has been thoroughly dried, it must be crushed td a fine powder, mixed with ashes, and snorted in a manner similar to commercial snuff. Epená or Nyakwana is best known to designate several tree species of the genus Virola, another widely used name in Peru is red Cumala ( Virola surinamensis ). Different species of Virola grow from Central America to the jungles of South America, but only in the western Amazon and in some areas of the Orinoco. Virola is known as magical and spiritual intoxicant throughout Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela and Peru.

The most active ingredient is 5-methoxy-dimethyltryptamine, a legal substance, that has been used by natives of the Amazon rain forest for millennia. The first reference, of Virola dates back to the early twentieth century, when a German ethnologist watched the natives, Yekwana snort snuff made with the resin of the Virola tree.
